This was the question posed to us by Ella at Notes From Home as part of her Friday Club. As soon as I read the prompt I was like,‘I know the answer to this one. Please Miss. Miss. I know this one. Miss. Pick me.’
This is the year anniversary of moving to our home and I know exactly why we live here.
We have space. Everything’s open, our living space, the outlook. As soon as I come home I feel at ease, relaxed. Well, maybe not all the time. Not when there’s crying or huffing or bickering.
I can open the back door and let them run out in the garden. And I can open the front door and they can scoot up and down the street safely.
We wanted to be part of a small community and that’s just what I feel we’ve got. A mixed community with friendly people and open arms.
We were fed up getting in the car when we wanted to go for a walk. I could never get my head around that,it drove me crazy. Now we just put on our shoes and walk.
There are nice pubs,an ice-cream shop,a Co,a good chippy and a kids park all within a ten minute walk of the house.
There is one school in the town and it’s a big focus for the whole community. It’s a small primary school with about 300 pupils surrounded my hills and the playground is lined by fields.
But it wasn’t like this from day one. We knew it was time for a move from the house we’d been in for seven years. We both had an itch and knew we wanted to find the house that the girls would grow up in. I think we all have one house that you think of when you look back on your own childhood, that you think as the house and this house will be my kids one.
We didn’t even know this town existed when we started looking in the area. It’s a small town,2,500 strong about an hours drive from Edinburgh city centre. We started looking at a more popular commuter town but didn’t find the wow house. The Boy saw our house on the internet, fell in love and persuaded me to check out the area even though the house was out of our budget range.

We drove into town on a rainy day. As anyone who’s visited Scotland knows,Scottish rain turns everything grey. The girls were overtired and bickered. My shoes were wet through. I found the whole visit super stressy and decided within the first 5 minutes that it wasn’t for me. But he loved it so it became quite a big deal. He wanted to live here,I didn’t. With a matter of weeks before we were packing up our sold house I agreed to give it another whirl. This time my sensible friend offered to meet us there.
She took the kids on a walk to the ice-cream shop and gave us some peace and time to explore. It was sunny. And I started to see us here, walking down for the papers,at the swing park.
Luckily for me the same sensible friend reminded me that it’s ok to admit you’ve changed your mind. I admitted it. He looked a little smug. We viewed the house, both said ‘wow’and here we are.
And you know what? At the end of sunny weekends I still feel like I’m in a holiday home and that someone will come round to pick up the keys and change the sheets for the next lot.

I live where I live because swivel my chair around we have a lovely view. We look out over the a tidal river so the view changes twice a day, high tide being my favourite.
Minutes from town, minutes from school,a park, dog walks and a 10 minute drive to the beach.
Though I do admit to sometimes missing the bright lights of a busier place.
I do love the location of the house and it is a nice house but it isn’t ‘The House’I have that to look forward too
Lucky you, that sounds gorgeous. There’s something so calming and relaxing about water, particularly the sea.
I can’t decide if I miss the busier city. I feel like I should say I do but when I actually think about it and don’t think I do,not to live anyway. It makes it more of an event when we do actually go in. Not so long ago we were driving at night through Edinburgh and the girls were absolutely mesmerised by the lights and the fact there were lots of people about,it was hilarious, just like a couple of right little bumpkins!
I live in the area where I grew up,one road away from my mum, which is a mixed blessing! My son went to the same primary school I did. I have tried living in another area –I lived on the other side of London once –but this area is perfect for bringing up children, lots of green space, very handy for getting into the city. Eventually I’d like to move to the sea though.
My niece goes to the school that my sister and I did and I really like that. Some of the teachers are even the same which makes me realise how they were actually quite young when I was there even though we considered them ancient.
Ah yes,the sea. That still remains a dream for me too. One day. When the kids are grown up and we are at the pottering stage. In the meantime I visit friends when I need a sea air hit.

What a fantastic view from your window with the bluish mountain against the greenery of the garden –breath-taking! I have often had a bad first impression and then fallen in love with a place later, btw.
Really? I really did struggle with that,I felt like I was ignoring or silencing my first impression and worried that that was a bad thing you know? But it’s certainly turned out for the best, thank goodness for my clever friend and her words of wisdom…

It sounds lovely! It must be great knowing you can just open the door and let the kids scoot around. You have made me want to move to the countryside!
My kids pretty much scoot everywhere now,it’s great, but it’s taken them a while to get used to not just getting driven everywhere anymore! I reckon everywhere has good and not so good and it’s just about what works for you all at that one time. Thanks for popping by mine
It sounds gorgeous. We have space but we don’t have local amenities and we really miss being able to walk to the shops.

It was a definite part of why we chose here, having all that stuff in walking distance and I love not being beholden to the car anymore!

I love your last sentence. That truely is magical when you feel like that. I feel that a lot here in Lanzarote, when we do something touristy, makes you realise what a beautiful place you live in and how lucky you are. It’s appreciating surroundings and living in the present:)
Thanks Fiona,I couldn’t get into your post when I tried last night.. need to try again.
Oh wow, that sounds gorgeous….love the outdoor space. Sounds like you have the perfect place.
Congrats on the Mad finalist btw
Thank you,and for voting if you did,I’m over the moon! x
“Now we just put on our shoes and walk”I love this about where we live too. It sounds lovely where you are. Fancy a house swap holiday?!
Bibsey Mama recently posted on their site:Cool España – 7 reasons why I live in Andalucía
I would bloody love a house swap! We did one when we were kids and swapped our Edinburgh two bed flat and Citroën 2CV with a gigantic Conneticut home with two cars and an electric garage! I’ve often thought what a good way to holiday it’d be but The Boy wouldn’t go for it,he’d find it icky a stranger sleeping in our bed and would think they’d nick our paintings
…and I don’t think that I could ever get this house clean enough to allow guests to roam free and unsupervised in it.
